Woodrow Kull and family

Our Story

Kull Furniture Store is a three-generation family store situated in downtown Altamont, IL.

Like many rural furniture stores in the Midwest, Kull's got its start in the funeral home business.

Woodrow Kull from Strasburg and Shelbyville, IL attended Worshams College of Mortuary Science. After graduating and working in Chicago for a year, he searched for a place to start his own practice after the Great Depression. He discovered our current store in downtown Altamont was vacant.

The funeral home formally opened in 1936, and Woodrow opened the furniture store the next year on the second floor, focused on selling and refinishing furniture.

Over the years the furniture business expanded. Woodrow's son Lynn, after serving in the army and receiving a BS in business from Murray State University and an embalmer's license from Southern Illinois University, moved home in 1972, to join the family business. Woodrow Kull passed away in 1982. Lynn took over afterwards.

Today, Lynn's son, Trenton has joined the business, and the store continues to be an integral part of the community, offering a variety of quality furniture, flooring and decor.
